HEIRLOOM GARDENING
An heirloom vegetable is commonly defined as an open-pollinated variety that is more than 50 years old. Heirloom varieties are grown as a way to diversify crop gene pools.

Using historical planting techniques, God's Gang Planting Dreams students will share ecology information, how to grow and harvest food, man's stewardship of the earth and its animals, and basic gardening and landscaping maintenance skills. There will also be training in the area of harvesting and the establishment of a Farmers Market.

All selected plants were chosen for their historical significance.
COTTON
Cotton growth and the weaving onto cloth, dates back to at least 3,000 BC in Africa, Asia, Mexico and Peru.

Eli Whitney's invention of the cotton gin was one of the revolutionary inventions of the 18th century.

Historically, cotton was the backbone of the Southern Economy and later influenced the Diaspora.

During the Civil War, cotton was grown in the extreme southern region of Illinois for export since a regular supply of cotton from the South was not available.

The invention of the steamboat greatly expanded the profitability of crops exported from Illinois.

Seed generously supplied, to God's Gang Planting Dreams and EDYC, by John House III of the Mansfield State Commemorative Area, Mansfield, LA. through heirloom seed specialists, Underwood Gardens will be planted around the entire perimeter of the EDYC Heritage Farm.
